Habits

Here’s what Fyodor Dostoyevsky (the Russian fiction writer & philosopher) had to say about habits:

“The second half of a man’s life is made up of nothing but the habits he has acquired during the first half.”

Could this be true?  I hope not.  I mean, I know that old habits die hard, but surely (now that I am in the second half of my life) I’m not just grinding away, stuck in the same old tire tracks that got me this far.  I’m hopin’ there’s there’s still some new stuff ahead of me.  You youngsters, take heed!  Get off the treadmill now, while there’s still time!  Develop no habits at all.  Or at least take pains to be sure that the habits you are now forming are those you want to risk having with you later in life.
